I'm not sure what to do. I told Justin that it would be up to him and he's going to give it some thought. Does anyone out there have a beagle? Does it dig like the dickens? Does it howl like crazy?
When it comes to dogs, Justin and I differ on what we want but I think a beagle would be a happy medium. We also aren't crazy about small dogs, so this is as small as a dog as we will probably get. And the fact that our yard and house aren't huge, we can't have a lab just yet. My dream dog is a border collie and his is a basset hound. Could two dogs be any more different?

What I want! (Justin doesn't think I will be active enough for him) I truly think my mom letting us watch the movie Babe when we were little ruined me. Ever since then I've wanted border collies. I'd probably be one of the crazy people on ESPN doing the agility courses with the dogs! I would love that!
We also want a puppy over a grown dog because the cats will freak. If we introduce them to a puppy over a grown dog they will be more used to the dog. We went to the local animal shelter today and saw so many sweet dogs and cats, it killed us! They didn't have any beagle puppies though, so we will keep searching!

Oh. My. Gosh! I want one! So cute!
Not to be a total downer...because puppies are unbelievably adorable.
But, a couple months after we got married we got an 8 week old lab puppy, and it just about drove me insane. After dealing with her for 1 1/2 years, and extensive obedience training, we had to find another home for her. Next time around, we are going to get 1) a smaller dog that is less energy 2) an older dog...
Our carpet still smells like pee despite steam cleaning it about 10 times.
Good luck with the puppy love! They are absolutely adorable. = )
I don't know much about those breeds...except border collies (which are very smart but really high energy) I know some people that have beagles and they say that they do howl a lot.
I have a shichon (which is a shih tzu/bichon mix) and she is a great dog! Small, doesn't need a lot of room, very personable and not too high energy!
The first dog I had as a kid was a beagle. He was a rescued from an abusive family, so that SEVERELY affected his temperament, but overall, beagles are amazingly loyal dogs! And they never lose that 'cuteness.' They always have those sad little eyes that make my heart melt!
The one down side is that any type of hound will always try to escape. That's how we lost ours... :-(
Oh my goodness!! It is a good thing you posted this for me to see because I am a great influence on getting a puppy!! :) We JUST got a little girl beagle puppy on Monday!! http://firstcomeslovethencomesmarriagethen.blogspot.com/2010/03/introducing-our-precious-new-addition.html
We have a 100lb Doberman too and when my husband went back to work full time he was so pitiful we decided to get him a friend! We LOVE big dogs, but just didn't think 2 100lb dogs was a good idea....I have always had beagle and love them – they are a good “in the middle dogs” soooo, we looked and looked for a beagle to save and found her Monday! We adopted her on the spot and she has been AWESOME! Seriously, not one accident in the house and she sleeps through the night in her kennel! Now, I do realize it has only been 3 days....but in puppy world, that is a BIG deal! :) We have not-so-fun steps off our porch too, which will take some getting used to but, I think she will be fine!
So, to end this ridiculously long comment - yes, yes, yes! get one! they just make you smile and happy even when you don't think you can be! :)
Awe they're all so cute, I've heard great things about Beagles! Go for it!
Adorable!
We have 2 big boxers and I wouldn't trade them for anything. We got them both at 9 weeks old and they are great! I love big dogs, but beagles are so cute. They can be mischievious and dig and howl, but all dogs can be like that. My female boxer, unlike most boxers, barks incessantly and has practically dug tunnels in our backyard.
I say get one!
We have 2 German Shepherds...aka, LIONS. Please, whatever you do to make yourself more at ease, do crate training. Ours have kennels the size of castles down in our basement, but they LOVE them. All I have to say is KENNEL and they both run downstairs and get in their own. They stay in them during the day, at night, and it's wonderful! Just food for thought! ;)
It's funny that so many of the blogs I'm following have mentioned puppies in the last week or so. Must be a springtime thing!
Love, love, love beagles. Very cute! My husband, however, wants a more MANLY dog. WHATEVER! You'd think after bearing him FOUR SONS I would deserve a fluffy little puppy, but no. So I say NO DOG until I get to be the one to choose what kind. Looks like we'll be sticking to just the cat.
My parents have a beagle and she doesn't really howl (unless she hears sirens) or dig. She's super sweet and SUPER spoiled!
I'm dying to get a puppy too, but the boy keeps saying no! :(
Seriously beagles are the cutest puppies ever!! But you never know quite what you are gonna get when they grow up! Still cute...but could range in size from like 14 pounds to 35! ha....
get one!!!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! I think yours is my new obsession haha! Those puppies are adorable. We want a puppy soooo bad too but we can't have one at our rental place. Boooo....!!!! Hopefully soon though.
SO cute! My friend just got a beagle about a month ago and he is precious!
Beagles are good dogs, I would just make sure you don't get one from a hunting line, then you could really expect some howling. Don't get a Border Collie/ Australian Shepherd if you live in a small city area - they NEED space. We have two, and even with taking them to my parents farm multiple times a week, AND they have full run of a nearly 2 acre back yard, the are extremely active and tear stuff up constantly. We have to work with them, and give them stuff to do or they go crazy.
Another good dog is a Wheaten Terrier, they're fairly chill for a terrier breed, but LOVE people and need a lot of attention. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are great, too. I worked for a veterinarian for 5 years and they were fairly low maintenance dogs, and easy to interact with.
Anyone that can resist a face like that isn't human! :0) Soooo cute!
Oooh those are so cute! I want a puppy too!
They are SOOO cute! :) My husband & I went through a similar "finding the perfect breed" situation before we decided on our sweet dog Malone! (there's a picture of him on the sidebar of my page!) We're both bigger dog types, but our house wasn't ready for a BIG dog yet! Also, I had a couple beagles growing up and...honestly, I personally think they need a LOT of room to roam around & dig! I'm sure each one has their own personality, but both of our beagles were serious diggers & escape artists!
p.s. thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm so glad you did--I LOVE yours already! Now I've got to go get caught up on all of your posts!! ;)
So cute! We just got a goldendoodle puppy last summer- she's a mix between a golden retriever and a poodle. It's been great! Growing up we had a short haired border collie; she's 15 now and still alive and kicking. She needs A LOT of exercise and is very driven. As long as you know that before you get one, you'll be good to go!
Dogs are a lot of work but pets are such joy. I'm a cat person myself (just one, not a crazy cat lady). If you're willing to put in the time you get so much back, and you're right, they are just too cute!
You should DEFINITELY get a puppy and then we can share tips :)
All of those puppies are so cute. They each stole my heart. I have a puppy that just turned 1 and she's the best dog in the world. She's a corgi chihuahua. It looks like you're searching for a little bit larger dog. I hope you find your dream puppy. One piece of advise I can give is that kennel training is the best form of potty training. We tried just trusting our other two to tell us when they needed to go--that was a huge disaster. We did kennel training with our puppy and it has worked out perfectly.
Can't wait to see what puppy you get.
Our hearts were stolen by a beagle puppy. Biggest mistake ever. We lived on 30 acres and still didn't have enough room. Beagles are notoriously stubborn. Ours would spend hours outside running, come inside and go to the bathroom on the carpet. My husband worked with her for months, trying to train her, to no avail. Beagles are hunters and once they catch a scent, they're off. In the end, we gave her away as we were afraid our neighbor would shoot her once hunting season started. She was excellent at keeping the dear out of our yard and from eating our gardens but we were afraid it would be her demise.
oh puppy love!!! we have two smushies and i so forget what lil puppies are like, just love the pics!
Hi! Just recently found your blog and am loving reading another Richmond blog (we just moved back!). We actually have 2 hounds, so I am a "yes!" vote for the beagle! One of ours is a beagle/foxhound mix and he is so sweet. Yes, my dogs howl, but they are smart and protective. Ours definitely need a lot of exercise so they get 2 long walks a day, but as long as they are walked for the most part they are happy campers. Happy puppy hunting!!
We have a beagle. He is almost 4 now.
He is wonderful, and a pain.
Beagle puppies chew EVERYTHING. They bark a lot and love to howl. The howling goes away. The barking gets a little quieter.
The chewing, not so much. Kobi (our beagle) will get into the trash a lot.
All that being said, you are probably scared out of your mind. Let me say this, Kobi get a little training but not a lot.
I will own a beagle when I get married, so I am not scarred for life, but I know what will be work.
My sister has a beagle and my cousin and her husband breed beagles. They are great dogs! We have a goldendoodle and love her so, so much!! Can't imagine life without our Macey pup!
They are so adorable! We have a dachshund and I love him so, so much! They are so fun :)
Thank you for commenting today :)
My fiance and I have a border collie mix and she is seriously the best dog I've ever had. She's so sweet and loyal. We have so much fun with her, we seriously constantly ask ourselves what we would do without having her to entertain us. I wish we could adopt more right now! And I'm a wimp and feel a lot safer being alone with a dog in the house. I know that's weird but I do! Haha happy puppy finding!
I want one too after those adorable pictures! I'm dying for a puppy too but the husband keeps saying not until we move into a house with a yard. If yours says yes, go for it :)
